A DVD screenshot of Meredith Burgess playing the villain Penguin was intended to be here. But since its taking 20th Century Fox over 2 weeks to read my one question email you'll just have to imagine the picture in your heads. ....by the way FOX I'm still waiting for a YES or NO response on my email.

Step 1
Reboot your PC with the Ubuntu Live Desktop CD then choose to check the
CD for defects if you haven't already done so.

Then choose to start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode.

Step 2
When logged into the Live Desktop CD session click the install icon.

Then choose to prepare disk space manually. I'm using the above Windows XP simulation again. Since there was only 5.5 GB to play with the
free space 773 MB
row won't be enough for us to install Ubuntu. But the point of my example is that with a bigger hard drive the previous unprocessed part from setting things up with Win XP, is where you would want to install Ubuntu on.
Step 3
To make it more confusing I'm going to jump to my drawing example. So be aware
we're discussing about 2 setups in parallel at the same time.
From our planning and drawing example there was a lot of partitions made.
3 of those partitions were Windows related so when you get to
this stage when installing Ubuntu, be careful not to touch those
3 Windows related partitions. You can see which partition Windows
resides in by looking for filesystem type NTFS or FAT something.

Then we had that extra separated Programs & Games partition for Windows. Which doesn't seem to be labeled with any useful info. That's where your own personal technical chart comes in depending on how you drew your partition plannings. If you partition like I have done except for the disk size portion. Then you can use my tech chart and get oriented with how the Device column is structured.
My simulation gives an illogical and unpedagogic example for my teaching purposes. But I can see that our separated Programs & Games partition for Windows is on the row
/dev/hda5 1044 MB unknown
Now I'm going to delete my Windows XP partition in order to make room for my Ubuntu simulation partition. You should use your
free space
row instead to create Linux related partitions. Just select a free space and click New partition button. Make it Primary and using filesystem ext3.

Then select the newly created Linux partition and click Edit partition button. Choosing Mount point: / which is a symbol for root. It means that's the location where Ubuntu operating system will install itself.

Then go through with the same process for your other
free spaces
in order to create more Linux related partitions. But make them Logical instead. Usually you only use partition type primary for operating systems.

Then click the Edit partition button to assign what kind of mount point your specific partition should be. We only need /home for our personal data. I forgot to make room for my Linux-swap which is very important to have.

After all this you basically follow simple instructions on the screen.
